Gratitude Ceremony
We go to New York City for an unusual ceremony. It was held to honor the dead who had donated their bodies for medical purposes. Kelly Jean Kelly has details.
A cadaver is the body of someone who has died. Since the 16th century, medical students have studied cadavers to learn about the biology of humans. In the past 40 years, New York’s Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons have honored donors of cadavers with what they call a "gratitude ceremony." Medical and dental students, professors and families of the donors attend.
This spring, the ceremony was held at Colombia University's Medical Center theater. Zachary Feldman attended the ceremony. He is one of many medical and dental students who have trained with cadavers.
“It’s nice to have a ceremony to acknowledge the larger context and to see the real story and the human story outside the physical body, to sort of corroborate your data from the lab with real relatives and real people who loved that individual. It puts you in touch with your own humanity.”
Children, friends, husbands and wives of the dead had the chance to give a small goodbye speech.
One daughter spoke of her mother’s desire to give to research.
“My mom felt that the greatest gift was to contribute to the education of others and always expressed that she wanted her body donated for research. By being here today, we know that her greatest gift and wish has been fulfilled.”
Paulette Bernd designed and supervises Columbia’s Clinical Gross Anatomy course. She says no other source of medical training can compare to study using human bodies.
“There’s manual dexterity in terms of learning to use dissection equipment that they will eventually be using in surgery as well. And they need to interpret what they see.”
Still for many, making that first cut into a human body can be hard. Elizabeth Shy, a medical student, says she was unsure.
“So even if you have a scalpel in your hand, you know that your job is to cut into the body, it’s hard to really put enough pressure to make that happen. I found myself throughout many, many labs, I would just be holding the cadaver’s hand, and I would find myself sort of rubbing the arm or the shoulder. Because I think it's still my human reaction to try to be comforting the patient.”
Zachary Feldman who plans to specialize in psychiatry says medical students often report a similar dream. He says they will dream of cutting into a cadaver who suddenly comes alive. And its face is the same face as the dreamer’s.
“I interpret that as in, when you start medical school, your boundary between physician and patient is really blurred…when you see someone hurting or ill it’s not hard to see your own mortality and your own vulnerability.”

“Because if you think about…how many people we are going to see every single day of our careers, we have millions of chances to make a difference in someone’s life. And that really only is possible because of the donors.

고인들의 아이들, 친구들, 남편들과 아내들은 짧은 작별 인사를 할 기회를 얻었습니다.
한 딸은 연구를 위해 기증을 원했던 어머니에 대해 이야기했습니다.
“제 어머니는 다른 이들을 위한 교육에 기여하는 것이 최고의 선물이라고 느끼셨고 자신의 시신을 연구를 위해 기증하고 싶다는 의사를 항상 밝혀오셨습니다. 오늘 여기에 있음으로써, 우리는 그녀의 최고의 선물이자 소망이 이루어졌다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다.”
폴렛 번드(Paulette Bernd) 씨는 컬럼비아의 임상 육안 해부학을 계획했고, 현재 이 과정을 지도하고 있다. 그녀는 인간의 몸을 이용한 연구는 그 어떠한 의학 교육 자료와도 비교할 수 없다고 말한다.
“언젠가 결국 자신들이 수술 시에도 사용하게 될 해부 장비에 대한 사용법을 배우는 면에서 손재주를 필요로 합니다. 또한, 그들은 자신들이 보는 것을 이해해야 합니다.”
아직까지 많은 이들에게는 인간의 몸을 처음 절개하는 것은 어려운 일이다. 의대생인 엘리자베스 샤이(Elizabeth Shy) 씨는 확신이 없었다고 한다.
“손에 메스를 쥐고 있고, 내가 할 일이 몸을 절개하는 것이라는 사실을 알고 있음에도 불구하고 이를 실제 행동으로 옮기도록 자신에게 압력을 가하는 것은 매우 어렵습니다. 많은 실험실을 거치면서, 시체의 손을 그냥 잡고만 있고 팔이나 어깨를 문지르고 있는 자신을 발견했습니다. 아직까지는 환자에게 위안을 주려고 하는 것이 제 자신의 인간 반응이라고 생각하기 때문입니다.”
정신 의학을 전공할 계획인 제커리 펠드먼 씨는 의대생들이 비슷한 꿈을 이야기 하는 경우가 많다고 이야기한다. 그의 말에 따르면 그들은 갑자기 살아나는 시체를 자르는 꿈을 꾼다고 한다. 그리고 시체의 얼굴은 꿈을 꾸는 이의 얼굴과 같다고 한다.
“의대를 시작하면 의사와 환자 사이의 경계선이 정말 흐릿해진다고 봅니다. 누군가가 고통스러워하고 아파하는 것을 보면 자신의 죽음이나 취약함을 생각하지 않을 수가 없습니다.”
감사 의식은 한때는 드물었지만 이제는 전국적으로 찾아볼 수 있다. 의대생 데이비드 핸킨즈(David Hankins) 씨는 시체 기부자의 가치를 과장하기란 불가능하다고 말한다.
“왜냐하면 우리가 일하는 동안 매일 보게 될 사람이 얼마나 많을지에 대해 생각해 본다면, 우리가 누군가의 삶에 변화를 주게 될 기회는 수백만 번도 넘습니다. 그리고 이것은 기부자들이 있기 때문에 가능한 것입니다.”
