There’s a new pet in town and it’s all the rage. They are pocket-sized, extremely social, loyal, and love to play. They can recognize their owner’s scent, voice, and even appearance. They are sugar gliders and go by another common name: “Sugar Bears.” Actually, they are marsupial gliding possums and they come from Australia and Indonesia originally. They do not carry any diseases and are considered “non-allergenic.” They are not destructive and do not chew on things.
The reason why most people have never actually seen one is simply because they breed so slowly—only having 2 or 3 babies a year on average. This is also why they cannot be found in local “pet shops.” They kind of have a squirrel-like body, but much smaller. Their length from the nose to the tip of the tail is about 24-30 centimeters or 12-13 inches, with the actual body about 5-6 inches long and weigh about 4-6 ounces. The Sugar Bear has a thick, soft fur coat that is usually blue-gray or yellow-tan in color. A black stripe is seen from its nose to midway on its back. It has five digits on each hand and foot. However, the striking feature is a “patagium,” the fur-covered, flat parachute-like extension of skin-membrane that helps it to glide in the air once taking a big jump. It goes from the fifth finger to the first toe on both sides of the body.
They are very clean animals and very inexpensive to feed. Their diet consists of: (1) fresh fruits and vegetables (like a small slice of apple per day), (2) and a Vet-approved “Glide-r’-Chow” and a calcium-based multi-vitamin called “Glide-a-mins,” which costs a total of around $4 a month per pet. However, they like fun ‘treats’ like Cheerios, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and almost any other sweet thing you can think of, but no chocolate! It will kill them.
