Cuba is an island country, located 90 miles south of the United States in the Caribbean Sea. For many decades Cuba has been in a spotlight of international news for a variety of reasons. The tensions between Cuba, a strongly communist country, and the United States have been high since 1961. In fact, from the 1960’s through 1991, Cuba and the U.S. had extremely tense relations because of the Cold War. During that time period, both nations were concerned with the potential military threat from their neighbor.
During the many years of military tension, the ruler of Cuba was a man named Fidel Castro. He was an intense and controversial leader who held office for a very long time, over 50 years! His brother, Raul, was head of Cuba’s armed forces and defense minister for the entire time Fidel was in charge.
Fidel and Raul were raised on a farm. At a young age, both were interested in politics. The government during the 1940’s was a repressive Communist regime. Both Fidel and Raul participated as socialist revolutionaries in many protests, which landed them in jail. By 1959 the revolution against the dictator resulted in the overthrow of the government. At that time, Fidel Castro took over as leader of Cuba, and he appointed Raul as second in command.
Raul Castro held many government posts alongside his brother. He played a significant role in shaping Cuba's political history. When Fidel became sick in 1997, he began preparing Raul to take on more responsibility leading the country. In 2008 the National Assembly chose Raul to become the President of Cuba.
As president, Raul Castro has brought political, economic, and social reforms to the country, although he is still a member of the same Communist political party as Fidel. He removed restrictions on travel for Cuban citizens and has allowed for more private businesses. He invited foreign investors to come into Cuba to help rebuild after many years of intense poverty. He also introduced a political change to limit the president to only serve two terms in office, including himself.
Raul has begun to rebuild diplomatic relations with the United States. He was photographed shaking hands with President Obama at the funeral of Nelson Mandela, which was a very powerful gesture for leaders of rivaling countries! The U.S. agreed to establish an embassy in Havana, Cuba, for the first time in 60 years. More is required from the U.S. Congress to re-open the economic and diplomatic relationship between Cuba and the United States, but for now, Raul Castro has led his country through a historic breakthrough into a long-awaited period of healing and prosperity.
