Let’s pause at that first point, “large land mass.” Did you know that some countries are so small that the entire nation is smaller than a city in another country!
In the Caribbean Sea, in the Pacific Ocean, and in Europe there are countries with an area smaller than 400 square kilometers! What is even more amazing is the fact that some of them are the richest, most remote, and most fascinating places on the planet.
The Vatican is the world’s smallest country. It is also known as “the Holy See” and is less than one square kilometer, located in the center of Rome, Italy. Because of where it is located, many people do not realize it is a separate country. But this country contains some of the most extensive and valuable collections of art and historical artifacts known to mankind.
Let’s travel to the French Riviera to find the next largest tiny country, Monaco. The entire population of the country is 36,000 people who all live very close together. This tiny 2 km2 of land shares three borders with France and one with the Mediterranean Sea. The Formula 1 Race makes Monaco world-famous, as well as the many millionaires, billionaires, and famous celebrities who make it their home.
With 21 km2, Nauru is the next largest country. Located off the east coast of Australia, it is also the smallest island country in the world. Tourists like to go there, but to live there is very difficult. It is known for being home to some of the most obese people in the world and has a 90% rate of unemployment!
Tuvalu, an island on the west side of Australia is 26 km2, and is home to only 10,000 citizens. Another tiny one is San Marino, 61 km2, another small independent country located completely inside Italy. It is one of the wealthiest countries based on GDP per person and has one of the world’s lowest rates of unemployment. Liechtenstein is the next largest small country with 161 km2. It is located in the Alps between Switzerland and Austria. It is very difficult to get to, except by airplane. If you had a large map, it would be very hard to find all of these countries because they are so tiny!
