The Boston Marathon
In April, 2013 two bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The explosions killed three people and injured 264 others. 14 Of the injured required amputations. The two culprits were two Chechen brothers, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Later, they killed a policeman and carjacked an SUV.
Prior to the explosions the area was swept for bombs twice. The second sweep was an hour before the bombs exploded. The first bomb went off two hours after the winner passed the finish line. The second bomb went off 13 seconds later. Some runners continued to cross the line eight minutes after the explosions.
After the explosions, rescue workers, medical workers and bystanders did what they could to help the wounded victims. The victims were then taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The police then ended the marathon and diverted the remaining runners to another location away from the bomb site.
Nearby buildings were evacuated and police closed down a 15-block area around where the explosions had occurred. This area was later reduced to a 12-block crime scene.
In Watertown, Massachusetts, the brothers exchanged gunfire with police. One officer was shot and suffered severe blood loss, but eventually recovered. The older Brother, Tamerlan was shot several times and his brother escaped in the stolen SUV, running him over in the process. Tamerlan was pronounced dead on the scene.
The town was essentially shut down with businesses closed and residents staying indoors while the police looked for Dzhokhar. Eventually, citizens were told that they could once again come outside. After this a man found Dzhokhar in his boat that was in his backyard. Police came, shot Dzhokhar, arrested him and took him to the hospital.
While in the hospital Dzhokhar admitted to his crimes. He said that his older brother had been the mastermind and they were also intending to bomb Times Square in New York City. Dzhokhar was indicted on 30 charges relating to the bombing, seventeen of which are punishable by death.
In April, 2015 Dzhokhar was found guilty on all charges. Now he awaits sentencing. The prosecutor in the trial, Nicole Pellegrini told jurors that Dzhokhar deserves to die for the his crimes. She focused on photos of four victims, three killed at the marathon and the fourth, the police officer that was murdered three days later.
Later witnesses were called to describe the horrific attack in detail. One of the witnesses was a victim whose legs had to be amputated after the bombing. Her daughter’s legs were also severely damaged.
